If you buy a hosting package for a year but then realize the domain name you wanted is priced at $5,000 or is already owned by someone else, you’re stuck with hosting for a site that doesn’t have a name yet. I usually recommend checking availability on a registrar first.
One thing to keep in mind is the “Free Domain” promos. A lot of Indian hosting providers will give you a .in or .com domain for free for the first year if you commit to a 12-month hosting plan. In that specific scenario, you are essentially “buying” the hosting first to trigger the free domain.
But even then, you have to choose the name during the checkout process. So, in your mind and in the workflow, the domain choice always leads the way. Just make sure you check the renewal prices for both, as hosting is usually a recurring monthly or yearly cost, while domains are strictly annual.
